Day of the Dead
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that celebrates deceased loved ones through a combination of rituals, food, and festivities. The holiday is celebrated from October 31 to November 2, and is a time to remember and honor ancestors, and to remind ourselves that death is a part of life.
The Sioux City Public Museum honors Day of the Dead with a day of celebration, including music, dancing, refreshments, face painting, and children’s crafts. The Museum also hosts an exhibit of Day of the Dead Altars, created by community members and on display October 20-November 1.
Día De Los Muertos: Noche de Ofrendas
This year’s theme is Noche de Ofrendas (Night of Altars). The celebration will be held November 1, 2026, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Sioux City Public Museum. This event is free to attend.
Candles are an important and meaningful decoration for Day of the Dead celebrations. All you need is tissue paper, paper, scissors, and little bit of tape to make your very own candle. Follow these instructions and bring the celebration home!
Dance the night away at the Museum!
DJ Tapatío (Isaac Quiñonez) will be playing music while instructor Yoelvis Rodriguez teaches Salsa, Banda, and Carnival dance.
