More than 40 years after a visit that left a lasting impression, the Foreman family returned to Sioux City to honor the final resting place of former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman.
Foreman, who passed away in March 2025, had often spoken about the peace he felt when visiting northwest Iowa in 1988. His family shared that when they arrived at Logan Park Cemetery just a few weeks later—overlooking the Loess Hills and near Stone State Park —“it looked exactly like he described.”
At a gathering held in April 2026, Foreman’s family reflected on his legacy and the meaning of fulfilling his wish to be laid to rest here. “Our father lived a life of purpose, faith, and gratitude,” they said. “To see him laid to rest in a place that brought him peace means everything to us.” George Foreman IV added that his father often referred to himself as “the happiest of all time,” and would have felt at home among the kindness and joy he associated with Iowa.
Mayor Bob Scott noted the powerful connection between Foreman and the region: “Their story is a reminder of how one place can stay with someone for a lifetime.”
The City of Sioux City is honored to have played a role in supporting the family’s wishes and welcoming them back as they continue to celebrate Foreman’s life, legacy, and remarkable journey from Olympic gold medalist to world champion, minister, entrepreneur, and beloved father.
