"World War II: 70 Years Later Exhibit" |
|
Seventy years ago the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor brought the U.S. into World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, more than 12 million Americans served in the armed forces and millions more worked in war-related industries. Every American was affected by rationing, bond drives, air raid drills and propaganda. The people of Sioux City and the Siouxland region were no exception. Thousands of Siouxlanders served in all branches of the armed forces and Sioux City was home to one of the Army Air Corps' largest bomber training bases. Dozens of local businesses participated in the war effort, with some receiving high honors for surpassing production goals. Local residents carried ration books, planted victory gardens, purchased government bonds, participated in blackouts, conducted air raid drills and supported loved-ones serving overseas.
The exhibit features U.S. military uniforms and equipment, German and Japanese military memorabilia brought home by returning American veterans, photographs and documents illustrating Siouxland's contribution to the war effort, along with ration books, service flags and propaganda pieces. |
