For the Teacher

W
e’re looking forward to seeing your class for a Sioux City Public Museum field trip! If you would like to discuss special educational projects, have any questions or would like to schedule a program contact us by e-mail or call 712.279.6174.

Are you interested in learning more about Sioux City history, but aren’t sure where to look? Check out the Sioux City History website or Kid's Corner for materials.

Programs at the Sioux City Public Museum
Some basic programs are available, but we are always looking for new ideas and ways to develop a variety of Museum experiences for local students. Please contact us if you have a program idea for your class or school.

Sioux City History (grades 4–5)
Bring your students to the Sioux City Public Museum for an overview of Sioux City history and an
in-depth look at the Sioux City Public Museum. Students will tour the first floor exhibit areas which host revolving special exhibits and the Pioneer Hall with a guide, then complete a History Hunt to explore the second and third floors of the Museum. Sioux City history exhibits on the second floor include favorite items such as George Weare’s “tin box”, a baseball signed by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and of course the Giant Clam Shell. No fee required, program lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

The Way We Lived (grades 2-3)
Special programs for this age group focus on the area’s earliest inhabitants with a tour through our Native American Hall. Students will learn about the differences between some of the tribes that have lived (and continue to live) in this area. Particular attention may also be paid to our Pioneer Hall, with a trip inside the “hands-on” log cabin and discussion of the variety of artifacts and how they were used. Students will have both a tour guide and a History Hunt to explore on their own. No fee required, program lasts approximately 1 hour.

PeeWee Pioneers (ages 4–5)
A variety of programs are available and are based on our temporary and permanent exhibits and may include activities such as crafts, games, play-acting, or storytelling. Parents, grandparents or guardians are encouraged to attend as well and there is no fee for adults or teachers. $1.00 per student, program lasts approximately 1 hour. Please call 712.279.6174 for more information about our upcoming topics or to schedule a reservation.

Before your Visit
If necessary, divide your students into groups prior to their visit.

Arrival
For your convenience use the unloading area on Jackson St. directly in front of the main entrance to the Sioux City Public Museum. Cars, vans and buses may be parked on Jackson or 29th streets.

A staff person or volunteer will meet your group in the Museum foyer, where the group will begin their visit. Following a brief introduction, the class may divide into their smaller groups to begin their program.

Museum Guidelines
We expect all Sioux City Public Museum visitors to behave appropriately during their visit. Children should use their “inside” manners, including walking and speaking quietly so that all visitors can enjoy the exhibits. No food or candy is allowed in the Museum.

Accessibility
The first floor of the Sioux City Public Museum is accessible by wheelchair. The second and third floors however, are not. If you have information about your students’ special needs that will help us make your group’s visit more successful, please contact by e-mail or call 712.279.6174 prior to your visit.

Museum Store
A trip to the Museum Store is available at the conclusion of your visit. We ask that only 6 to 8 students use the store at once. If you choose to allow your class to visit the store, you may want to suggest a limit on the amount of money they can bring to spend. Feel free to copy our list of inexpensive store items for your students so that they can determine in advance what items they would like to purchase.
